Petersfield Automotive offers accurate Class 4 MOT tests and Class 7 MOT tests, the standard annual safety and emissions check required by law for most everyday vehicles.
During the test, we carefully inspect key areas such as lights, brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, seatbelts, bodywork, and exhaust emissions to make sure your vehicle is safe and roadworthy.

Which Vehicles Require an MOT?
By law, most vehicles over three years old must have a valid MOT every 12 months to be driven on public roads. This helps protect you, your passengers, and other road users by picking up safety issues before they become serious problems. Driving without a valid MOT can lead to fines, invalidate your insurance, and may put you and others at risk.
Which Vehicles Require Class 4 MOT Tests?
Class 4 vehicles can be:
- Cars, passenger vehicles, motor caravans, private hire vehicles, motor tricycles, quadricycles and dual purpose vehicles in all cases with up to eight passenger seats
- Goods vehicles not exceeding 3,000kg design gross weight (DGW)
- Taxis and ambulances with up to eight passenger seats
- Passenger vehicles, ambulances, motor caravans and dual purpose vehicles with nine to twelve passenger seats
Which Vehicles Require Class 7 MOT Tests?
Class 7 MOTs are:
- Class 7 vehicles are goods vehicles over 3,000kg up to and including 3,500kg DGW
- They will be category N1
- Their first test will be required after 3 years
- This test does not cover the testing of class 6 and 6a vehicles. These vehicles are tested by DVSA testers and are carried out at DVSA testing stations and other designated premises
- Taxis and private hire vehicles may be subject to additional local requirements
- 4 x 4 pickup and crew cab type vehicles with a DGW over 3000kg up to and including 3500kg are to be considered dual purpose vehicles for test purposes where no unladen weight data is available if they meet all other criteria in either option A or option B detailed within Section 2.2 Dual purpose vehicles

- 1Booking your MOT
You can book your MOT by phone, online, or by visiting our reception. We will agree on a date and time that suits you and confirm the MOT price up front, with no hidden extras. If you need repairs or service at the same time, let us know so we can allow enough time and provide a clear estimate. - 2Arrival and check-in
Please arrive a few minutes before your booking time. Park in the marked area and come to reception with your keys. We will confirm your details, check your contact number, and explain how long the MOT is likely to take. If you want to wait on-site, we will show you to the waiting area. If you prefer to leave the car, we will call or text you when it is ready. - 3How long the MOT takes
A standard Class 4 or 7 MOT usually takes around 45–60 minutes if no major issues are found. If we spot anything that may need repair, we will discuss it with you before doing any work. Our MOT fee is fixed and clearly displayed, so you always know what you are paying for. - 4What we check during the MOT
The MOT is a safety and emissions check, not a full mechanical inspection. Our tester follows the official DVSA checklist, which includes:
Brakes – performance, balance, brake pipes, hoses, and handbrake operation.
Lights and electrics – headlights, brake lights, indicators, number plate lights, hazard lights, horn, and dashboard warning lights where required.
Emissions and exhaust – exhaust system condition, leaks, and emissions test to make sure your vehicle meets legal limits.
Tyres and wheels – tread depth, condition, damage, and correct size and type for the vehicle.
Steering and suspension – steering rack, joints, springs, shock absorbers, and general stability.
Bodywork and structure – corrosion, sharp edges, and the condition of sills, chassis, and other key areas.
Windscreen, wipers, and washers – chips or cracks in the driver's view, and that wipers and washers work properly.
Seatbelts and seats – condition, security, and correct operation of belts and mountings.
Doors, mirrors, and fuel system – doors open from inside and out, mirrors are secure, and the fuel system has no leaks. - 5If your vehicle passes
If your car passes, we will issue an MOT certificate and explain any advisories. Advisories are items that are not yet a failure, but may need attention soon, such as worn tyres or slightly corroded brake pipes. We will give you clear, simple advice on what needs to be done, how urgent it is, and an honest estimate for any work you want us to carry out. - 6If your vehicle fails
If your car fails, we will give you a failure sheet listing each item and why it failed, using plain language. We will talk you through the results, show you the issues where possible, and explain your options. You can:
